How We Select and Recommend Gifts

Every product that appears in a Birthday.com gift guide has been evaluated by a named editor against a consistent set of criteria. We do not include products simply because they are popular, heavily advertised, or pay high affiliate commissions.

Our selection process begins with category research: identifying the products that consistently appear in our target recipient's wish lists, are highly rated across thousands of verified purchases, and represent genuine value at their price point. We then narrow that pool through direct evaluation — purchasing products, gifting them, and measuring reactions.

Recipient Delight

Would the intended recipient be genuinely pleased? Not just satisfied — pleased. We distinguish between gifts that land and gifts that are merely acceptable.

Product Quality

Does the physical product match its price? Materials, construction, and finish quality are evaluated relative to the price tier — a $30 gift is assessed as a $30 gift.

Arrival Experience

A gift that arrives damaged, in inadequate packaging, or late fails regardless of product quality. We evaluate shipping reliability and presentation as part of our assessment.

Value at Price Point

Does the gift feel generous for its price? We assess whether there are better alternatives at the same budget and note when a more expensive option isn't meaningfully better.

Editorial Independence from Affiliate Partnerships

The core principle: Our editorial team selects and ranks products first. Our commerce team applies affiliate links after selections are locked. Commission rates do not influence rankings.

Birthday.com earns revenue when readers click affiliate links and make purchases. This creates a theoretical incentive to favor products with high commission rates regardless of quality. We address this directly through structural separation.

Our editorial editors select products based on testing, research, and editorial judgment. They submit their selections to our managing editor for approval. Only after editorial selections are finalized does our commerce editor apply affiliate links — choosing the affiliate program that pays most from among the already-selected retailers, but never changing which retailer we recommend or the ranking of products.

Specific safeguards we maintain:

  • Editorial editors do not know commission rates when selecting products. Commission rate information is available only to the commerce team.
  • Product rankings are determined by editorial criteria, not revenue potential. A product that earns no commission can appear in our guides; a product that earns high commissions will not appear if it isn't genuinely good.
  • We do not accept payment from brands for product inclusion, positive reviews, or favorable ranking.
  • If a better product exists at a retailer that pays lower (or no) commission, we recommend the better product.

Testing and Evaluation Methodology

We test products differently depending on their category:

Physical Gift Products

We purchase, unbox, and assess build quality, scent (for candles and personal care), taste (for food gifts), wearability (for apparel and accessories), and print quality (for art and custom items). For products with durability claims, we test over multiple weeks. We record initial recipient reactions and follow up after 2–4 weeks to assess ongoing use.

Experience Gifts & Subscriptions

We subscribe to, redeem, or arrange experience gifts and evaluate the process end-to-end: ease of gifting, redemption experience, delivery quality, and recipient satisfaction. For subscriptions, we evaluate at least two delivery cycles.

Personalized & Custom Gifts

We order custom items using real personalization inputs. We evaluate: production accuracy, print/engraving quality, packaging, production-to-delivery timeline (vs. advertised), and how closely the product matches its online representation.

Digital Products

For digital gifts (online courses, gift cards, streaming subscriptions), we evaluate the purchase and gifting process, redemption simplicity, and reported recipient experience from verified reviews.

Not every product in every guide is directly tested by our team. In cases where direct testing is not possible, we disclose this and rely on aggregate verified review data, brand reputation, and editorial research. We distinguish in our guides between "tested by our editors" and "selected based on research."

Corrections Policy

We make mistakes. Our corrections policy is designed to address errors quickly and transparently, without creating the impression that our content has always been accurate when it hasn't.

1
Factual errors are corrected with a visible update note

When we correct a factual error — incorrect price, inaccurate product specification, wrong information — we add a correction note that states what was wrong and what the correct information is, with the date of correction. We do not silently edit errors away.

2
Guide update dates reflect meaningful changes

When we add new tested products, update prices, or revise our picks based on new information, we update the "Last updated" date on the guide. We do not update this date for cosmetic changes (formatting, typos) or to reset the page's freshness signal for SEO purposes.

3
How to submit a correction

If you believe a product description, price, or factual claim is incorrect, please contact us via our Contact page and select "Factual correction." Include the URL of the article and the specific claim you believe is incorrect. We review all submissions and respond within 2 business days.

Affiliate Relationships Explained

Every page on Birthday.com that contains affiliate links includes a compact disclosure notice below the headline. The disclosure reads: "Birthday.com is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. This does not influence our editorial recommendations."

We participate in the following affiliate programs, among others: Amazon Associates, ShareASale, CJ Affiliate, Skimlinks, 1-800-Flowers, Uncommon Goods, Viator, and Tinggly. Participation in these programs does not obligate us to feature any particular product or retailer.

Our Privacy Policy contains additional information about how affiliate link clicks are tracked and how that data is handled.
